Representation Matters on Stage and Beyond

The Theatre Arts Department is taking a mindful approach to its production selections to increase representation and inclusivity on stage. To present stories that resonate with Fullerton College students, the Theatre Arts Department actively seeks works showcasing diverse experiences and perspectives. Director Michael Mueller selected the production of Marian or the True Tale of Robin Hood because it brought to light a lot of questions about gender, gender identity, and the LGBTQIA2S+ community.

“What I liked about this version was that it was not a show about the LGBTQIA2S+ community, but a show that prominently features them in roles that are not trauma based,” said Mueller.

The cast for Marian or the True Tale of Robin Hood was instrumental in creating the vision for the production. A new student D.E.I. representative position was created to ensure student interests and concerns about representation and the humor being presented could be heard and addressed throughout the production process.

A talented, diverse cast brought to life In the Heights, which explores gentrification along with other themes, such as love, family, community, and the American story of immigration through the lens of the Latinx community.

In The Heights was another production that expanded representation through its diversity of characters, celebration of Latinx culture, and tackling relevant issues. For most of the students in the production, this is a show they have been dreaming and thinking about for years because it showcases people of color not as token characters but as main characters who have agency and a story to tell. By being mindful and intentional with their production choices, the Theatre Arts Department hopes to create a more inclusive and equitable theatre experience for all.
